It is a good idea to only change currency once you have arrived in South Africa (it’s cheaper). Credit cards (Mastercard/Visa/Eurocard/American Express) are widely accepted in banks, shops and restaurants. Also ATM’s (automated teller machines) are readily available. Unfortunately, acquiring fuel (petrol and diesel) can only be paid in cash. Value added tax: Currently the value added tax (VAT) is 14%.
